About First Nations Performing Arts (FNPA)
The FNPA (formerly known as the Global First Nations Performance Network / GFNPN) – is an Indigenous-led new infrastructure, support system, and resource that will uphold the self-determined goals of Indigenous artists and increase the quantity, impact, and capacity for Indigenous performance in rural and urban communities in what is currently called the US, and internationally. The FNPA is an innovative support infrastructure, focused initially on cultural change and artist empowerment in the lands currently referred to as the US.
Its goal is to be a catalyst in building a robust, networked support system for commissioning, touring, and presenting Indigenous performance, and capacity building for the Indigenous and non-indigenous performing arts sectors. The FNPA is led by Indigenous artists, organizations, and organizers in collaboration with non-indigenous partners in order to support Indigenous practice and work, and to foster Indigenous kin, accomplices, and audience relationships, locally and globally. It aims to be a key voice in the cultural, social and policy developments toward Indigenous advancement in the cultural sector and seeks a project director committed to Indigenous and Tribal sovereignty, Black and Indigenous kinships, social justice and equity.
The FNPA works from within the performing arts field to increase recognition, support, and equity for Indigenous performance art practice, presenting, and research. The social impact of the FNPA is momentous: we understand and honor the need to recognize self-determined artistic and community practices, to uphold healing, relationality, and to center Indigenous individuals and communities during the process of dismantling colonial systems, asserting sovereignty, and aligning with generations-long efforts. We understand the performing arts system globally as one that continues to marginalize and harm Indigenous people and land; we understand the power that performance and story wields in this moment and envision its potential to foster positive social change.
Project Director
First Nations Performing Arts is seeking a Project Director to help establish this multi-year pilot program in collaboration with an established advisory consortium. Duties include: administrative and structural development of First Nations Performing Arts; developing and amplifying artist-centered programs including touring, creation, presentation, residency, and exchange; identifying funding opportunities and developing fundraising plans; mapping the existing Indigenous-led organizations, foundations, artists and others in what is currently called the US, towards better collaborations, impact and advocacy of Indigenous performance; and developing and implementing decolonization/Indigenization processes for presenting partners.

Desired candidates should have strong communication, administrative, and community relations skills. Knowledge of the Indigenous performing arts field and presenting arts field at large and experience in fundraising is helpful. Experience working with Indigenous communities and artists essential.
This position will be embedded within the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA), the fiscal sponsor for FNPA. PICA is on traditional and unceded lands of the Multnomah, Wasco, Kathlamet, Cowlitz, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin Kalapuya, and Molalla peoples. First Nations Performing Arts Project Director will have access to PICA infrastructure but requires a self-motivated person willing to work with an advisory council and self-direct research, programmatic developments, and workflow.
