Creative Exchange Lab Meet the Artists

After a year-long hiatus, PICA’s beloved Creative Exchange Lab (CXL) is back –this time as a Covid-safe virtual residency. Launched in 2015, CXL brings together artists from across geographies, cultures, and forms to promote artistic exchange, dialogue, and the development of new interdisciplinary work. Our Spring 2021 Creative Exchange Lab artists-in-residence are Javaad Alipoor, Reese Bowes, Fernanda D’Agostino, Sorour Darabi, devynn emory, Elisa Harkins, shawné michaelain holloway, Raja Feather Kelly, Mohammed Murshed, Marcela Torres, and Sarah Turner.

This program is particularly special in that it provides essential generative time for both independent and collective research and experimentation, while also sparking collaborations, connections, and friendships that strengthen Portland’s art community. you are invited to a series of events: 1. a conversation, 2. a film, 3. a traveling collective public grief altar, and 4. an online archive of our offerings--to the deceased, to the living, to ourselves, to each other.
we begin with a conversation between devynn emory and artist Okwui Okpokwasili, presented by Danspace Project on wednesday, march 31 at 4:00pm PDT / 7:00pm EDT, followed by a world premiere of deadbird the film. you’ll also be able to stream the film via PICA from may 27th through 30th.
from may 28th through 30th, you will be able to visit the public grief altar, can anybody help me hold this body, in-person at PICA’s outdoor back lot. while there, please take a photo of your offering and archive it at deadbird.land/archive. the audience is encouraged to engage with all aspects of this work.

Knowledge of Wounds
Knowledge of Wounds is a ceremony, a digital fire, a calling to vibrate in good relations across Indigenous time and space. Curated and led by SJ Norman (Koori, Wiradjuri descent) and Joseph M. Pierce (Cherokee Nation), Knowledge of Wounds will unfold as a series of digital events throughout 2021, foregrounding Indigenous methodologies and leadership to create new spaces for knowledge exchange between First Nations communities across the world.
Following the first edition of Knowledge of Wounds—held in-person in January 2020 at Performance Space New York—organizers Norman and Pierce have expanded the program to become a global digital gathering which is collectively supported by five leading experimental arts organizations: Performance Space New York (NY), Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PDX), The Momentary (AR), Ballroom Marfa (TX) and Performance Space Sydney (NSW, Australia).

SUMMER EXHIBITION
Aki Onda, A Letter from Souls of The Dead
Aki Onda’s forthcoming solo exhibition, A Letter from Souls of The Dead, makes delicate arrangements out of found and constructed objects, images, sounds, and performance in the hopes of tracing a certain kind of intentional and unintentional forgetting. He is interested in the presence of absence and in the material evidence of our existence. Onda is currently based in Mito, Japan.
