Introducing Time-Released

August – November 2023

PICA announces Time-Released, a new member of the Time-Based Art Festival family. From high summer to late fall, PICA is stretching time and encouraging you to participate in a succession of offerings. Time-Released will feature projects from local, national, and international artists, including DB Amorin, Seba Calfuqueo, Allie Hankins and Hannah Krafcik, Anthony Hudson / Carla Rossi and Pepper Pepper, Joseph Keckler with Holland Andrews, Will Rawls, and Andrew Tay & Stephen Thompson. Developed with artists and you in mind, Time-Released reimagines how we come together in the name of curiosity, inquiry, and the expression of new ideas.

With projects spanning over four months, we are excited to share this new extended format with you! Programs kick off on August 17, 18, and 19 with Carla Rossi and Pepper Pepper are GLOOP. This will be followed by Alka domo (August 24–September 24) and Flowing Like Waterfalls (August 16) — both by Seba Calfuqueo — and corresponding panel discussion, Seba Calfuqueo with Malcolm Peacock, Vo Vo, and moderator Derek Franklin on August 29. True to the title, we’ll slowly share more information about each Time-Released program over the coming months. Join drag duo Carla Rossi and Pepper Pepper for a wellness seminar gone wrong—or right?—when the mushrooms peak. Tackling wellness culture, microdosing, land acknowledgments, and featuring a lip-sync on an actively-inflating airbed, GLOOP is a gauntlet of spectacularly unhinged drag from two of Portland’s most beloved grifters.

All programs with Seba Calfuqueo curated by Christian Viveros-Fauné and co-presented with Converge 45 as part of its 2023 citywide exhibition Social Forms: Art As Global Citizenship.

Alka domo is a video installation and performative work that recontextualizes a story about Caupolicán, the legendary toki of the Mapuche, Chile’s largest Indigenous community. A toki symbolizes strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. In Alka domo, Seba Calfuqueo holds a hollowed-out tree trunk above their head at places of personal history and significance to the artist as well as at various public sites, representing the complex interaction between Mapuche and Chilean culture.

In addition to Alka domo, Seba Calfuqueo will present Flowing Like Waterfalls. This 20-minute performance approaches the power of water's fluidity as a means to explore the body, gender, sexuality, and the relationship of water to life, forests, and ecosystems.
