In celebration of Black freedom in the United States, there are tons of local events and initiatives happening throughout Portland this week and beyond. Although these are not PICA programs or events, we are honored to use our platform to help spread the word about these opportunities. Please note that the following language is from the sources provided.

Inheritors of Movement
Exhibition Dates: June 4–July 26, 2026

The Black Gallery: 916 NW Flanders Street
Inheritors of Movement is a four-person exhibition featuring works made by Black artists of immigrant descent. This multidisciplinary exhibition gathers members of the Black immigrant diaspora to explore the gifts, tribulations, griefs, and celebrations that come from their family’s migration from home to home. Concurrently, the United States is enacting anti-immigrant violence through ICE. This exhibition recognizes that the violence of ICE intersects with the histories of violence inflicted upon Black Americans.
This exhibition features the efforts, loves, confusions, and dreams of bæ, Naomi Likayi, Yesmín Abduljalil, and Yaya El Tiempo, who also serves as curator.

Activities include community run and walk options for all paces, interactive art and community activations, music by DJ Seaton, race entry giveaways, shoe demos, food and drinks from Plant Based Papi and Great Notion Brewing, art activities, and more! Share with your communities and bring a friend to celebrate this historic day!

Join us for a screening of Seeds, an intimate and visually poetic portrait of generations of Black farmers in the American South. The feature will be preceded by the 4 min film Superorganism Music Video ft. WRK! by Syon Davis.
Following the screening, there will be a discussion moderated by Kalimah Abioto, featuring panelists Mirabai Collins, Director and Co-Founder of Black Future Farms, and Anyeley Hallová, CEO & Founder of Adre Development Firm. We’ll also have items for sale by vendors Primary Rituals, Landweaver, Black Future Farms, Sirius Star Farms, and tabling by The Kajani Collective.

Celebrate 10 years of advocacy with Don’t Shoot Portland! Enjoy music from LaRhonda Steele, view incredible art, and become acquainted with the work of this community-based organization. For 10 years, Don’t Shoot Portland has shown up for families experiencing violence and discrimination. This fundraiser is determined to ensure the work continues.

The American Cowboy is an archetype. It lives in our collective consciousness, representing the love of the land, care for its creatures, and the hard work that affords freedom. It is a romanticized analog in our digital age. Black women and men have been cowboying since the beginning and have a thriving culture today. Our aim is to elevate this culture through media and live events, encouraging young people to continue this legacy.
