Supporting Partners, Artists, and Community Events (SPACE)
Established in 2018, PICA’s SPACE program provides access to our facilities, equipment, and staff to local artists and community organizations for residencies, workshops, and events. By offering physical space and myriad resources, this program aims to advance access to the arts to communities in Portland and beyond.
While SPACE programs don’t always manifest as public events, it is a critical and ongoing component of PICA's commitment to support the local arts community. See a list of past SPACE partners here.
Currently in SPACE, artists from Elbow Room are using PICA’s Resource Room as their studio once a week. We also have multiple artist residencies beginning: one with Olivia Camfield and Woodrow Hunt, and another with Tahni Holt, Emma Lutz-Higgins, Jess Perlitz, Luke Wyland, and Al Knight Blaine.
Additionally, there are two public SPACE events happening soon: Roger Beebe: Films for One to Eight Projectors, presented by Cinema Project, on January 29; and the premiere of In Preparation for Disappearances to Come, a new work by Linda Austin Dance, from February 6-8. Read on to learn more!

| Elbow Room is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community art studio and gallery dedicated to supporting artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Elbow Room and PICA have fostered an ongoing community partnership since 2022. Through weekly studio arts programs hosted by PICA, Elbow Room artists have access to PICA’s library of art books for inspiration and immersion into contemporary art, and can work with a wide range of artistic media in PICA’s Resource Room. |

Roger Beebe: Films for One to Eight Projectors

This evening of expanded cinema will include multiple-projector performances and essayistic videos that “explore the world of found images and the ‘found’ landscapes of late capitalism.” With a fleet of 16mm, Super8, and video projectors, Beebe’s work touches on the themes of labor, structures and structuralism, and the real and virtual, not only in the content of the images but also in how they appear on screen.

In Preparation for Disappearances to Come (Premiere)

In Preparation for Disappearances to Come is a music and dance collaboration, choreographed by Linda Austin with dancers Allie Hankins and Danielle Ross with music composed and performed live by Chris Cochrane (guitar) and Kevin Bud Jones (electronics).
Following the performance on Friday, February 7, there will be an artist talk between Austin, artist/death doula Nan Curtis, and artist Amanda Leigh Evans. Additionally, Evans will lead a workshop entitled When I Die: A Will-Writing, on Saturday, February 8 at 4:00 PM.
