Miller combines virtuoso choreography with cutting edge motion capture technology to investigate the relation between the foreign and familiar in contemporary life. Inspired by a profound sense of cultural dislocation during a trip to Eritrea, Miller reconstellates the human form and habitual behavior, gently prodding the audience to shake off conventional ways of looking and remembering, while recognizing the human need for rest and comfort. Landing/Place is a stunning fusion of dance, video, digital animation, and an atmospheric soundscape by Albert Mathias.
Miller has been making dances for over 25 years. Bebe Miller Company has performed in Europe, Asia and Africa and across the US, including BAM’s Next Wave Festival, the Walker Art Center, City Center Theater, and Jacob’s Pillow. Miller has received fellowships from the NEA, the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, an American Choreographer Award, and numerous Bessie Awards, including one for Verge, developed in part during a residency at PICA in 2000.
Landing/Place was developed with support from The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) and the creative residency programs of the Wexner Center for the Arts and the College of the Arts at The Ohio State University. Landing/Place is funded, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art; the Doris Duke Fund for Dance of the National Dance Project, a program administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts; The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; Altria Group, Inc.; and the Multi-Disciplinary Grant in Arts and Humanities funded by the colleges of Arts and Sciences and the Office of Research at The Ohio State University.
