Flight of Mind

Flight of Mind marks the culmination of a five-year project tracking animal migration and devising choreographic systems in response. The movement, ferocious, unexpected and delicately phrased, holds powerful and complex emotional energy mined from each dancer. With composer David Kean and artists Bob Braine and Leslie Reed, Monson creates an integrated urban environment using sampled building noises and an improvised wetland made of non-native plants.

Since 1983 Monson has pursued an original approach to dance, combining experimental forms with social activism. Her work has been presented in Japan, Australia, Europe, Cuba, Tanzania and across the U.S. Her awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Foundation for Contemporary Performance Art Fellowship, NEA Choreographer’s Fellowship, New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and a Bessie for sustained achievement in the dance field.

Flight of Mind is made possible by the Doris Duke Fund for Dance of the National Dance Project, a program administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. Flight of Mind is a co-commissioning project by the Myrna Loy Center/Helena Presents in partnership with Dance Theater Workshop, PICA, and the National Performance Network Creation Fund. The Creation Fund is sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Ford Foundation, Nathan Cummings Foundation, Altria, and the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency). The music for Flight of Mind was commissioned by the American Music Center Live Music for Dance Program.
