Échantillons features members of Vivarium Studio situated behind a storefront window that is outfitted with a computer mouse which passersby are encouraged to click. By clicking on the mouse, the passerby sends one of hundreds of captioned fragments, play instructions, notes, situations, or special effects to the actors. The group inside responds to the directives of the device, moving in front of a white wall meant to represent a computer screen. A piece at the crossroads of performance, visual arts and theatre, Échantillons thwarts traditional frameworks of representation, and encourages a reconsideration not only of the methods by which audiences view performance, but also interrogates our collective dependence on technology and the barriers technology poses to genuine human interaction.
