Spalding Gray died in January 2004, leaving behind an enormous amount of work, both published and unpublished, and a legacy that continues to resonate in American cultural life. He was celebrated as the inventor of the confessional autobiographical monologue, and used it masterfully to illuminate the twists of fate, magical synchronicities, and dark corners of our lives with intelligence and humor. This eloquent tribute, woven from journal excerpts, poems, and monologues, conceived and directed by Kathie Russo and Lucy Sexton, is read by a cast including Ain Gordon, Bob Holman, Hazelle Goodman, Calvin Johnson, and other special guests. Leftover Stories to Tell is part of an ongoing project to archive and honor Spalding’s memory, and perhaps to capture one of his elusive “perfect moments” in which doubt, distress, and existential angst yield momentarily to a broader epiphany.

Spalding Gray co-founded The Wooster Group in 1977, one of New York’s premier experimental theatre ensembles, where he launched his renowned series of autobiographical monologues. Several of his pieces, including Swimming to Cambodia, Gray’s Anatomy, and Monster in a Box, toured internationally and were made into critically acclaimed films. In addition to acting in thirty-eight movies and several Broadway productions, he was the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions including an Obie Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation.
