Cipher, by vocalist and composer Samita Sinha, is a work that explores the phenomenon and politics of vibrational forces. Through dissecting notions of self, Cipher decolonizes then reconstructs the body with love. Cipher’s stellar ensemble features a gritty tabla rhythm machine altered by DJ Dave Sharma, an ektaara, looping devices, and bass frequencies. The visual terrain is crafted by Christopher Kuhl within a set by Dani Leventhal, and costume design by textile sculptor Anna Telcs. Each aspect of Cipher is threaded together by Sinha’s voice creating a sonic vibrational architecture that surrounds the audience. Ranging from structured to improvisational, from melodic to atonal, Cipher’s experimental structure expresses Sinha’s diverse heritage and investigations: North Indian classical forms (raga and thumri); folk music (early American blues and Bengali Baul); pop and electronic music.
