Fin de Cinema is a recurring live film score series curated by Gina Altamura of Portland music venue and nightclub, Holocene. This series, established in 2009, allows local pop and experimental musicians to reinterpret the soundtracks to classic art films. FIN DE CINEMA returns to TBA for the third year in a row, and celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the series. This year’s edition will be an original live score of Black Orpheus (1959), composed and performed by visionary local musicians.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Mike Gamble is an adventurous guitarist and multi-instrumentalist whose work with electronic modes of composition are integrated endlessly into his setup. Gamble has spent the last 20 years immersed in the creative jazz, experimental rock, and improvised music scene primarily in NYC, with close ties to New Orleans, Burlington, Boston, San Francisco, and now the Pacific Northwest. He has had the pleasure of recording over 25 albums and has been touring the states, Canada, and Europe with his critically-acclaimed guitar trio The Inbetweens, Counter Record’s Cougar, and alongside doom-metal originators Earth. His more recent collaborators include Bobby Previte, Todd Sickafoose, Nels Cline, Wayne Horvitz, Esperanza Spalding, Matt Chamberlain, and Lori Goldston.

Since relocating to Portland, Mike Gamble has dived into the jazz and experimental, Pop, Indie Rock, and electronic/modular scene and gigs 4-7 times a week. He currently is a guitar instructor at Reed College, Willamette University, Oregon State University, and is the Artistic Director of Portland’s long-standing experimental music organization, The Creative Music Guild.

Local musician and photographer Akila Fields plays keyboards in Shy Girls, makes his own shoegazing R&B as Palm Dat, and shares his vision at akilafields.com. Every Saturday he hosts INTUITIVE NAVIGATION on XRAY.FM / 107.1 from 6-7pm alongside Gina Altamura, a specialty radio show which focuses on new-R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop and the latest in electronic pop.

Amenta Abioto is a songwriter and producer from Memphis, TN. Currently based in Portland, OR. In her one-woman performance, she builds vocal and instrumental loops from synth, drum machine, kalimba, and guitar creating atmospheric textures. Amenta surprises and tantalizes audiences with mind-bending ideas while skipping vocally from soul-shaking gospel to smooth jazz. Her music is boldly mystical and soul-fired, and her raw live performances invoke elements of both theatrical surprise and magic through ancient African diasporic sounds and stories.

Noah Bernstein is a saxophonist/composer active in the boundless expanses of the Portland, OR music scene. You may have caught him performing regularly with the instrumental hip hop/free jazz duo GRAMMIES, or R&B dudes Shy Girls, or touring extensively with tUnE-yArDs in support of their album "Whokill" back in the preteens of the 21st century. On really lucky and rare occasions you can hear him collaborating with keyboardist/producer Akila Fields. You may have even eaten a few of his bagels. Bernstein holds degrees from the Oberlin College and Conservatory in jazz saxophone performance and creative writing. He grew up in rural Vermont and carries with him its brooding forests and rolling hills wherever he goes.

POPgoji is a large dance band mashing up Brazilian rhythms with pop-soul lyrics based in Portland, Oregon. In 2013, percussionist Michael Galen wanted to build on the vibrant energy of local samba jam sessions (pagodes) by making it easier for non-Portuguese speakers to participate fully. With this intention in mind, he rallied a group of versatile musicians to combine Brazilian rhythms with American Pop-soul. POPgoji was an instant hit in the samba community and quickly grew to a wider audience as a staple dance band in Portland. POPgoji has evolved to be the go-to world pop-soul band at NW festivals and events including: What the Fest!, MAI Fest, Doe Bay Fest, and Oregon Country Fair. POPgoji’s core members are Michael Galen, Renata Austin, Peter Fung, Pyatã Penedo, Michael Dougherty and Kanda M’benza N’goma. POPgoji has featured special guests including: Massamba Diop (Baaba Maal), LaRhonda Steele (Portland’s First Lady of the Blues), Brian Davis (Pink Martini), and Dudu Fuentes (Batucalacatuca). POPgoji released their debut album, Extended Play, on June 30, 2018. Produced by figure8sound, the album showcases the band’s iconic sound with a selection of fan-favorite originals and covers.
