The Autopoets: Roland Dahwen and tuesday smile with Stephanie Snyder and Lisa Dent
Curators Stephanie Snyder and Lisa Dent discuss the interdisciplinary exhibition and performance project, The Autopoets, with featured artists Roland Dahwen (Portland, OR) and Tuesday Smillie (NYC). A partnership between Reed College’s Cooley Gallery, Converge 45, and the TBA Festival, The Autopoets is on view at the Cooley Gallery through October 6, 2019.
ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS
tuesday smillie was born in Boston, MA, and moved to Portland, OR in 2001, where she received her BFA from Oregon College of Art & Craft in 2007. Her work has been shown across the United States and Canada, including recent solo exhibitions at the Rose Art Museum in Waltham, MA; Participant, Inc. New York, NY; Haverford College in Haverford, PA; and group exhibitions at the New Museum, NY; Artists Space, NY; Rubin Museum, NY; and Fort Worth Contemporary Arts in Fort Worth, TX. In 2014 Smillie was named the first resident artist by the Museum of Trans Hirstory & Art (MOTHA). Her work has been featured in Artforum; The Boston Globe; and New York Magazine. She has lectured at Cornell University and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Roland Dahwen’s experimental and documentary films and installations have been shown widely at institutions including: the California Institute of the Arts; the Portland Art Museum; the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s Time-Based Art Festival; Northwest Film Center; and galleries and film festivals in Brazil, Cuba, and the United States. In 2018, Dahwen received an Oregon Media Arts Fellowship, and was an artist-in-residence in the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art's Creative Exchange Lab. In 2013, Dahwen founded Patuá Films, a studio and production house based in Portland that creates films, installations, and music videos in collaboration with a wide range of interdisciplinary artists, musicians, and writers. Dahwen is based in Portland, OR.
Lisa Dent is the current guest artistic director of Converge 45. Her background includes work in film, theater, and the visual arts as a curator, gallerist, writer, production designer, and creative producer. Dent was most recently the director of resources & award programs at Creative Capital (2012-2017), leading the financial and advisory services programs and advising awardees regarding the full realization of their projects. Prior to joining Creative Capital, Lisa was associate curator of contemporary art at the Columbus Museum of Art, where she organized exhibitions including Stephanie Syjuco: Pattern Migration, Currents: Latifa Echakhch, and Supply & Demand. Dent was a Helena Rubenstein Fellow at the Museum of Modern Art and has held curatorial staff positions at the New Museum of Contemporary Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She was director of the Friedrich Petzel Gallery in New York and from 2004-08 owned and managed Lisa Dent Gallery in San Francisco where she presented the work of emerging and mid-career international artists. Dent received her BFA from Howard University, her MFA from NYU, and completed the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in curatorial studies. She has served on several juries and committees and is currently a board member Triple Canopy.
Stephanie Snyder is the Anne and John Hauberg Director and Curator of the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, a position she has held since 2003. A graduate of Reed College and Columbia University, Snyder is the curator of numerous exhibitions, including: Gregg Bordowitz, I Wanna Be Well (Reed College, 2019; Art Institute of Chicago, 2019); Wynne Greenwood: Kelly, at the New Museum, NY (co-curated with Johanna Burton and Sara O’Keeffe, 2015); Wynne Greenwood: Stacy (2014); Supports/Surfaces (co-curated with Wallace Whitney, 2014); Jamie Isenstein: Will Return (2013); Kara Walker, More & Less (2012); Bruce Nauman, Basements (2012); and David Reed, Lives of Paintings (2008). Snyder has received a Curatorial Research Fellowship from the Getty Foundation, and was a Fellow in the Getty’s Museum Leadership Institute. In 2013 she received an award for her critical writing from the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) and the CUE Foundation, New York. The author of numerous catalog essays and other writing projects, Snyder is a regular contributor to Artforum.com.

TBA Conversations are an opportunity to hear directly from festival artists about their practices, processes, and the ideas behind their work through presentations, panel discussions, and dialogues with guest artists, curators, and scholars.
All TBA Conversations are FREE of charge and take place on the PICA Patio unless otherwise noted. TBA:FOOD service will be available, including grab-and-go lunch, snacks, and drinks.
