DESCRIPTION
The workshop structure parallels my process: exploring movement/dance and the creative practice as non-linear, multidirectional, and interdisciplinary in nature. We will utilize whatever resources we have, bringing it all (metaphorically, and literally, if you have it) into the room! We will shift between movement, drawing, collage, sound, found object sculpture—whatever your curiosity calls for. Setting aside external measurements of competency or expectations of formal training in our movement and visual art practices, we are able to work within a variety of mediums as a way to learn more about our physical and choreographic interests.
The workshop starts with a movement practice to move us into our sense-based, creative desire body and out of our analytical, judging-from-the-outside brain. You don’t have to have any dance training or movement background—just a body! We will use my version of contour line drawing as another way to see and arrange bodies/people/objects in space... aka: another way to choreograph. There will be time to further explore the drawing > making > moving > making > drawing > moving continuum either on your own or with others.
I’m not a trained visual artist; I'm not trying to make good drawings. I use a variety of mediums to create more doors into my choreographic body. I seek to actively expand what my creative practice is, and find that keeping that definition broad and roomy works best for me. In this workshop, we can explore how we treat drawing, sculpture, sound, video projection, sets, costumes, and beyond as an equal material to dance/bodies moving in space.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Zoe Scofield (she/her) is a 2015 Guggenheim Fellow and a dance and visual artist based in Seattle, WA, and Los Angeles, CA. Zoe is the co-artistic director and founder with Juniper Shuey of zoe | juniper, a dance and visual art company since 2005. Her work has been commissioned and presented by Jacob’s Pillow, New York Live Arts, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, On the Boards, RedCat, MASS MoCA, The Frye Art Museum, The Joyce Theater, PS 122, Carolina Performing Arts, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. Zoe works in performance, video installation, photography, opera, and film. She has received funding from the Mellon Foundation, the Princess Grace Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New England Foundation for the Arts, the National Performance Network, and more. Zoe’s current piece, Tell the truth and shame the devil, is a live dance and music collaboration with Xiu Xiu.
