laptop at THE UNIT

A roving installation presented in the mobile exhibition space, THE UNIT, laptop will travel to the tech hub of Beaverton and various locations around central Portland, including regular stops at THE WORKS. laptop considers how the pace of technological change and obsolescence bring about the potential for what the artists deem “micro-nostalgia.” laptop is part of an ongoing collaboration between Philippe Blanc and Katherine Bovee and runs in tandem with their “static” diorama, Desktop on view at PICA.

THE UNIT was conceived and constructed in Portland, Oregon in the Summer of 2005 as a utilitarian mobile exhibition space capable of supporting alternative and conceptual art work that may otherwise be hindered by the traditional four walled sedimentary exhibition space.

THE UNIT’S first incarnation was as YOUSCREAMISCREAM..., a mobile viewer interactive sculptural installation by San Francisco artists Patrick Rock and Brian Storts which anonymously sold affordable art in the form of 25 cent Neapolitan ice cream cones while circling the perimeter of the 2005 Affair at the Jupiter Hotel.

Future exhibitions of THE UNIT will bring German artists Thomas Moecker and Simone Schalbe from Leipzig, Germany to Portland, OR where they will depart on a statewide journey using THE UNIT as a base for staging live performance and sculptural social interactions.
