Repeat After Me
“...Imagine a bunch of energetic but clueless aliens trying to audition for American citizenship based only on what they’ve heard on the radio...” —Willamette Week
Mining popular American music from the last hundred years, Hand2Mouth Theatre samples karaoke, outlandish theatricality, exhaustive dances, and absurdist humor in this imaginative work that questions what it means to be a true American. The company plays fast and loose with many of the icons Americans hold dear, marrying heartfelt working songs and campfire sing-a-longs to Southern rock anthems and SUVs. Steering a course between irony and true compassion, Repeat After Me takes us on a manic tour through the other America and back into ourselves.
Hand2Mouth Theatre is a Portland-based performance company which incorporates dance, theatre, music, voice, physicality and visual artistry. The artists of Hand2Mouth choose to create original work that embraces the power of the live encounter via excavation of a shared culture, history, and imagination. Over the last three years Hand2Mouth has engaged in an ongoing collaboration with Polish Theatre Statca Szamocin and the company recently began a bilingual collaboration with Mexican director Ruben Ortiz. Repeat After Me will perform in Seattle as part of On the Boards 2007/08 Northwest Artist Series.
Creation of Repeat After Me was made possible with support from the Regional Arts & Culture Council and The Equity Foundation.
